KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is not research and development orientated and lacks comprehensive and in-depth studies on various issues, said MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat.

“Monetary support for research work is even below par,’’ he

said, adding that society has yet to appreciate the far reaching effects of research and development.

“We need to develop a comprehensive set of values and norms for Malaysians that transcend racial and language barriers.
“I hope the Centre for Malay-sian Chinese Studies will ultimately want to upgrade to study

issues which is not confined to Malaysian Chinese.

“Racial harmony is a main topic to conduct an in-depth research,’’ said Ong, adding that one should not confine his or her mindset to day-to-day issues as there were more issues relevant to long-term development.

Ong was speaking to reporters after launching a fund-raising event for the centre where he also announced the Federal Govern-ment’s contribution of RM80,000. The centre was set up in 1985 to conduct research work on the Malaysian Chinese community.

Centre chairman Prof C.T.Tan said he expected the centre’s expenses to be between RM200,000 and RM300,000 a year.

He hoped to raise funds to cover its expenses for six months through sales of calligraphy pieces.

A total of 400 pieces of Chinese calligraphy are put up for sale at the Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall until 7 tonight to raise funds for the centre.

Prof Tan said the Malaysian Chi-nese need to find its identity, establish good values and achieve racial harmony in a multi-racial society.
