Abstract
In recent years, issues related to physical and mental health have garnered increasing attention in Malaysia. This is particularly true concerning adolescents, as reports of youth suicides have become alarmingly frequent. According to data from the Malaysian police, nearly half of the suicide cases from 2019 to 2021 involved adolescents aged 15 to 18, many of whom were still in school. Furthermore, the 2015 and 2017 National Health and Morbidity Surveys in Malaysia revealed that among the three main ethnic groups, Chinese Malaysians have the highest proportion of mental health issues, and the second-highest rate of suicide-related behaviors (following the Indian community). These findings highlight the critical importance of addressing the mental health of Chinese Malaysian adolescents. This is especially relevant for Chinese Independent High Schools, where the majority of students are ethnically Chinese. Schools should pay closer attention to their students’ physical and mental well-being.
To better understand the physical and mental health status of students in Chinese Independent High Schools, the researchers further examined the Life Adaptation Scale for Malaysia Chinese Independent High School Students (MCIHS-LAS) and conducted follow-up studies on life adaptation status. The study aimed to provide schools with data-driven insights to enhance counseling mechanisms and improve the reliability and validity of the scale. The research involved surveys conducted at seven Chinese Independent High Schools across northern, central, southern, and eastern Malaysia. The analysis included comparisons based on gender, grade levels, and geographic locations. The findings serve as a reference for schools, enabling them to design or modify counseling programs and related activities that are more suited to the needs of Chinese Independent High School students. Ultimately, the goal is to support students in completing their education with better physical and mental well-being.
