摘要

1920年，英殖民地政府颁布了《1920年学校注册法令》，不少华校因此被勒令关闭。但这个停办学校的具体数据究竟有多少，一直是个未知数。历年来，学界对此课题的讨论并不多，且多以315间华校遭停办作为数据之依归。本文主要以官方宪报与民间文献作一统合，初步勾勒出数据之概况，并对此中之细况作一说明。经多方文献整合后发现，海峡殖民地与马来联邦于1920年至1930年间至少有603间学校遭停办，其中568间基本可确认为华校。这一组数据凸显了多层意义，不但反映出早年华校蓬勃发展之史迹，也丰富了战前华教史的史料与数据，并从中为华校与政治关系史提供了一些论述基础。

Abstract

In 1920, the British colonial government had promulgated the "Registration of Schools Ordinance 1920" and resulting the closure of Chinese schools due to the decree. However, the data about school closures had always been unknown over the years. There was not much of discussion about this topic in academia, and the articles mostly stated 315 as the basis for the number of Chinese school closure. Therefore, this article mainly integrates the official gazette and unofficial documents to outline and illustrate the general situation of data. It was found that the Straits Settlements and the Federation of Malaya had at least 603 schools were shut down between 1920 and 1930, of which 568 of them were Chinese schools. This set of data not only reflects the vigorous development of Chinese schools in the early years, but also enriches the historical materials and data of the pre-war Chinese education, and yet provides some theoretical basis for the history of Chinese schools and political relations.
