Abstract
The Kapitan System in Malay Peninsula can be traced back to the Portuguese colonial period in the 16th century. Subsequently, Dutch and British colonial as well as Malay sultanates, inherited and further developed this system, gradually making it an indispensable pillar of local political and social structures. Regarding the history of Chinese Kapitans in Selangor, scholars generally agree that Kuala Lumpur officially began appointing Chinese leaders as Kapitans in 1858, with Kapitan Hiu Siew being the first. He was followed by Liu Ngim Kong, Yap Ah Loy, Yap Ah Shak, and Yap Kwan Seng, making a total of five Kapitans. However, due to the scarcity of historical records, the appointment of Chinese Kapitans outside Kuala Lumpur has long remained an underexplored topic, leaving significant gaps in historical research. The discovery of the Light Letters Collection (1768-1794) has broken this limitation, bringing to light Encik Tim, a long-overlooked Chinese Kapitan of Selangor. Even more strikingly, in-depth examination of these letters confirms that the history of appointing Chinese Kapitans in Selangor dates back to at least 1788, or even earlier—70 years before the widely accepted date of 1858. This revelation not only challenges existing academic consensus but also fundamentally overturns traditional perceptions of the origins of the Chinese Kapitan system in Selangor, providing solid historical evidence for its early development. Therefore, this study will center on the Light Letters Collection (1768-1794) to reconstruct the history of Encik Tim, analyze the historical context, and address gaps in existing research. By deepening our understanding of the evolution of the Chinese Kapitan system in Selangor, this research aims to offer a fresh academic perspective and concrete evidence for the study of the Chinese community’s history on the Malay Peninsula.
